VW Golf won’t start when it is cold?

We live on Vancouver Island so it is rarely below zero… well last winter and apparently this one the car won’t start if it is below zero for more than a day or two…Not very cold atall though! -2 to -5C is all it takes to kill it, it is not a tired battery because once it warms up, it starts right up(and we have lights electronics when it won’t start) It will not turn over at all, just hum… I was thinking perhaps condensation in the starter freezing? but that is a TOTAL guess since I am not all the mechanically inclined and came up with it all on my own

Intriguing. Your guess almost sounds logical. It would have to be freezing the the spring loaded gear on the starter. If the gear does not slide out and engage the engine it would hum but not start. You are smart. Remove starter and spray gear and spring with graphite type of lube.
