What are some good tips for practicing golf in the winter?

I live in Steamboat Springs Colorado in the valley we get an average of 150-200in of snow in the winter this makes outdoor Golfing near impossible. I am a Freshman this year and would like to make varsity next year. It is really hard for me to get to the gym to workout since i have a large family. And there is not a indoor Driving Range nearby. I was on the JV team this year and in the tournaments shot an average of 90. However, when i would just golf by myself i would shoot in the low 80s high 70s. I need some help to make my tournament score better and i need some good winter practicing tips. Thanks

From your description you need to practice indoors at home or the office.

With others in the family around practicing your full swing with club in hand won’t be very safe.

I would suggest you focus on a view specific areas.

Fitness is more important than most realize. Golf specific exercises and stretches will make you a far better golfer over a long competitive season.

Putting is responsible for about half your total strokes. Practice your putting stroke on the carpet all winter. The speed of the carpet will be very different than that of the greens. Nevertheless you can make great strides in improving your putting by utilizing a putting practice plan this winter.

Just because you’re indoors doesn’t mean you can’t work on the full swing. You’ve heard of “air” guitar maybe? Practice your swing without the club. Your focus should be on proper sequencing, shoulder turn and hand positions throughout the swing.

Lastly don’t ignore the mental game. The reason you score better in non-competitive rounds is all mental. The pressure of competition takes time, training and experience. Find the right mental training techniques to help you overcome the effect of pressure.
