I briefly heard this wknd. that Henrik Stenson is only playing the European Tour in 2008…anybody know?
Is he still committed to the Pga Tour majors and the WGC Accenture Match Play tournament?
It was definetely covered during the NBC Telecast for the Target. And I don’t think it is a far fetched report, in the past year, Stenson has had one of the most rigorous schedules in golf and has played a lot of golf around the world, probably even more so than Ernie a few years ago.
He was quoted as saying that the amount of travelling was actually hurting his game, and had run out of gas very early on.
As it was mentioned before, he just had a child, which, from most people’s perspective, would increase his motivation to stay closer to home and not travel as much.
The other part of the puzzle is that even though the purses are smaller in the european tour, the level of competition is not that far off from the PGA Tour (Consider their success in the Ryder Cup). And now with the “Race to Dubai” in place, there’s quite a bit of money to be made in Europe….and anyways, contrary to popular belief for a player of his caliber it is not about the money anymore. It is about winning, and winning Majors and high profile tournaments. Which regardless of PGA Tour status, he will continue to play.
I think the reason why it hasn’t made a huge media splash is because even though he’s a very good player, he’s not Tiger.
