How do I launch a new food line with my name/label on it?
I have an idea for a food product line that I would like to launch. I do not want to make the food but I want an established company to distribute the food w/my name /logo on it. How do I go about doing this? What is my first step? I think I have a really great idea and wanna get started on it. If anyone has resources available I would appreciate it.
First, find a local (or semi local) company that manufactures something similar and contact them. Many companies produce products for other entities that are sold under different labels (Trader Joe’s, for example, has it’s own brand of Ice Cream which is produced by “Double Rainbow”, an established ice cream producer that has been around for decades and is famous for their San Francisco treat!). An established company will also already have the FDA & USDA licensing/rules/regs handled and you won’t need to bother with it – very complicated territory at times, especially if you’re dealing with meats!Also, they may be able to help you with your recipe – when you produce products in large batches, the recipe may need to be altered – it’s not as simple as doubling every ingredient – an established producer can help you to create your product and keep the quality up to your standards (consistency, taste, etc.) or at the very least, direct you to someone who can.
Second, who will be distributing your product? You will need to start somewhere, perhaps a local grocery chain?
Third, if it’s possible, give back to your community by keeping it local! It may be tempting to outsource to China, but can you really guarantee your product’s quality and safety? Supporting your local businesses keeps your local economy strong!
