2010 Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca Golf European Tour Preview

Preview for 2010 Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca Golf European Tour event during 13th-16th May 2010.

During 13th-16th May, the European Tour heads to the Balearic Islands for the Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca at the Pula Golf Club, on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

This is a new event on the European Tour schedule although the Pula Golf Club formally hosted the Mallorca Classic. Iberdrola is Spain’s leading energy company and the world’s largest producer of wind power.

Opened in 1995, Pula Golf Club is one of Mallorca’s best known courses and was re-designed by Jose Maria Olazabal.

Players to Watch

As always, the focus is on recent performance and there will be much interest in the young teenager Noh Seung-yul, from Korea, who won the Malaysian Open just two months ago and subsequent 4th place finish at the Ballantines Championship.

All the talk seems to be of the Dane – Soren Hansen. He has not played too much golf of late but when he has does he seems to do well. Although Soren missed the cut at The Masters this year, he has manged twelve top ten finishes in the past year.

The other firm contender in the field is the young Englishman Chris Wood, who finished 3rd in Italy last week. Since finishing 5th as an amateur at the 2008 Open Championship, Chris has achieved a lot, but still not managed to secure his first European Tour win.

Peter Hanson has been very consistent in 2010 without really contending for a title. In this slightly weaker field than many he has faced of late he stands a very good chance.

Past Winners

This time last year, Gregory Bourdy from France beat England’s Sam Little by two strokes to win at Pula and past Spanish winners of this event included Miguel Angel Jimenez, Sergio Garcia and Jose Maria Olazabal and this year Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, Alejandro Canizares and Jose Manuel Lara will be trying their best.

Hole to Watch

16th Hole – 442 yard dog-leg left demanding an accurate drive towards narrow sloping fairways with water on the left and bunkers on the right. The water continues up the fairway and affects the approach shot.

This event is one of many events where The European Tour hosts golf in Spain but unfortunately is not one of the strongest fields, however, this week will prove a great opportunity for one of the youngsters or locals.

This golf event is set to be very exciting, and if you’re travelling avoid dissappointment and know where you are staying. Hotels in the area are likely to be expensive, and self catering holiday apartments in Majorca could prove to be a very good alternative option, but make sure you book early!

If this is not possible, don’t panic, as there will still be other forms of holiday accommodation in Majorca or just outside.

Live coverage of The Iberdrola Open Cala Millor Mallorca golf can be seen on Sky Sports during the four days 13th-16th May 2010.
